A CHANCE TO STOP UNFAIR HIRING PRACTICE NYS |
To: Gov. George PatakiCurrently, in the State of New York, disabled people, retirees, homemakers, recent divorcees, new mothers and others who are returning to the workforce after a long absence, are being almost literally locked out by potential employers.
Many company's like Troyjobs, won't even allow you to talk to interviewers, if you are not able to show a recent work history. It does not matter at all to these businesses what the reason for your absence is, or wheter you are qualified to do the job--no recent work, the door is automatically closed. Period.
This hiring practice does not reckognize volunteer work, family caregiving, pregnancy, illness/accident, education, or any legitimate reason.
We the undersigned feel that this is a form of discrimination. To lock the doors to gainful employment, solely on the basis of no recent work history, is wrong. This is because a recent work history is NO proof of someone being an able worker.
Because potential employers utterly refuse to reckognize legitmate reasons for unemployment, this is a discriminatory practice. They don't have to say, we won't hire you because of your (disability, age, gender, etc.), they just have to say, "you have no recent work history," therefore making the business a loophole to escape discrimination suits. This loophole MUST be closed!
We, the undersigned, formally request the great State of New York to make the needed change(s), to insure that ALL New Yorkers have a fair chance at gainful employment.Sincerely,
