Free the Coptic Priest wife

We have previously written to you several letters concerning the ongoing persecution by extremist Muslims, aided by the Egyptian government, against the peaceful and defenseless Coptic Christians of Egypt, for no reason other than their Christian faith.

Recently, undisputable evidence of recorded tapes were obtained which prove that the relentless campaign of persecution against the Copts of Egypt is well organized, encouraged and facilitated by Egyptian government officials, on both central and local levels.

The burning and looting of churches, personal properties, residences, cars and business places of Christians has gotten out of control, mainly in upper Egypt. The abductions of Christian women and girls and their forceful conversion to Islam have terrorized each and every Christian family in Egypt. All in broad daylight under the nose of conniving state security police.

The most recent abduction took place this week November 27, 2004 against the wife of a priest, Father Youssef Mouawad, in the province of Damanhour. The name of the priest’s wife is Wafaa Constantine Messiha, she is the mother of a grown son, an engineer, and a daughter in college. Her abductors, who are government officials, are Mahmoud Hiba, Muslim Cleric Nagy Yadem, Hafez El-Qady and Abd El-Wahid Saad Radi.

Please be advised that thousands of Coptic Christian youth are currently demonstrating for her release inside and around churches in several provinces including Cairo and being subjected to brutality by local police and security forces.

There are thousands more Christians demonstrating in the province of Assyut for a similar case where the police, directed by Abd El-Mohsen Saleh, a member of the ruling political party, are holding a man and his eighty year-old mother and proclaiming their conversion to Islam, in an attempt to force the man’s wife and their five children to also convert.

We ask you, Mr. President, to authorize the Secretary of State, through the U.S. Ambassador in Egypt, Mr. David Welch, to interfere and demand the release of Mrs. Messiha from her captors, and put and end to the police brutality, terror and organized persecution against the Coptic Christians of Egypt.

We also urge you, Mr. President, Honorable Congressemen to take the necessary steps to prevent the occurrence of another Darfur of Sudan in our homeland of Egypt. May God bless you all and grant you the wisdom to lead the world into peace and freedom.
