Bristol Students Against Homework

To Whom It May Concern:
Many of the students in Bristol high schools believe that they are being given too much homework. We have eighty-four-minute periods, we do schoolwork for six hours each day. There is absolutely NO reason to give us even more of each subject every day. Anything we have for homework, we can do just as easily during class.
We wouldn’t have to worry about the horror of forgetting your work at home. Everyone forgets things, we’re only human. How many times have you done something like forget to bring coupons to the grocery store, or locked yourself out of your car or house?
When we become adults and get jobs, we're most likely not going to have to come home and do more of the same exact work we did all day. So why are we doing it now?
Our books are extremely heavy. Studies show that if you carry more than 10-15% of your body weight on your back, it can lead to back problems. Two or three books and a binder can weigh much more than 20 pounds. So, if you were 200 pounds, this would cause no problem. However, most high school students don’t weigh that much. There are some people that weigh around 80 pounds! That means they carry at least one fourth of their body weight home each day. That is completely outrageous and very, VERY unhealthy.
Now, we aren’t just a bunch of lazy teenagers, sick of doing homework. Some people’s lives don’t allow them the time to do homework correctly. Some students have to work to help make money for their families. Even though very few students do have this particular situation, they count just as much as everyone else does. Lots of students have divorced families and travel back and forth between houses. Keeping track of belongings is hard enough, never mind keeping track of books, projects, and papers.
If we no longer had homework, it would also greatly decrease the amount of work teachers do on a regular basis.
With all of these factors added together it makes doing homework an extremely difficult thing to manage. If you could eliminate this factor from our lives, it would be most appreciated.
