Save Bindlestiff Studio

Founded on the principles of experimentation and community involvement in 1989 by Chystene Ells, Bindlestiff Studio became the first permanent Filipino-American Performing Arts Space in the United States in 1997. Since then, it has remained committed to developing a wide array of new work expressing the breadth and diversity of the Filipino/Fil-American experience. From the all-female Pinay Collective to the recent FOB Show, a show dedicated to exploring the immigrant experience, Bindlestiff has nurtured the voices of a new generation of Filipino and APA artists who are helping to deconstruct and redefine our shifting cultural identities. The success of our company is rooted in our close ties to the community and in our structure as a grassroots collective. Many of our resident companies and visiting artists were first involved with Bindlestiff as volunteers or participants in community workshops, and have since gone on to make tremendous contributions to our organization and to the field of Filipino arts.

As Bindlestiff strives to take the next step in its evolution as a true epicenter of Filipino-American performing arts and continues in its efforts to revitalize the 6th Street neighborhood of its birth, we, the undersigned, urge the City of San Francisco to ensure that Bindlestiff Studio returns to its home in the Plaza Hotel upon its completion. We recognize the tremendous social, cutlural, and artistic value Bindlestiff Studio brings to not only the South of Market Area, but to the entire Bay Area. San Francisco cannot afford to allow such a vital arts organization and the community it represents to be displaced.
