Boycott Cary Towne and Triangle Town Centers for 2008 Holiday Season

To:  Merchants at Cary Towne and Triangle Town Center Malls

In the hope of pulling in casual shoppers and making it easy for them to vote in their free time, the Wake County Board of Elections leased space at Cary Towne Center and Triangle Town Center Malls for Early Voting from October 16th - November 1st, 2008. But now the management of Cary Towne Center and Triangle Town Center Malls is prohibiting citizens from conducting what they consider electioneering -- which includes simply shaking hands with or even talking to voters about candidates for public office -- 50 feet or more beyond the poll. They have threatened to arrest anyone who violates this policy. We believe this is a violation of state election law and the First Amendment to the US Constitution, which allows freedom of speech and freedom of association between citizens in the name of improving our democracy.

The economic downturn has dominated the debate between candidates this year, but it is also threatening retail business for the upcoming holiday season. With limited dollars to spend, we Triangle residents will purchase gifts where we feel most welcome and comfortable. That clearly does not include the aforementioned malls. Therefore, we, the undersigned -- Republicans, Democrats, and independents alike -- pledge to boycott Cary Towne Center and Triangle Town Center malls for the 2008 holiday shopping season. We have indicated below how much of our business will go elsewhere.
