To: ZUC and Oakland City CouncilZoning Update Committee of the Oakland Planning Commission: Rezoning the Central Business District at Lake Merritt.
We, the undersigned among many residents of Oakland, oppose high-rise zoning designations for the "Lakeside Apartment District" or the "Lake Merritt Historic District" (a.k.a. the "Gold Coast" - Lake Merritt from 14th St. traveling east on Lakeside Drive, then turning north to Snow Park at 20th St. & Lakeside Drive). The Gold Coast is a diverse, stable, densely populated urban community with an abundance of culturally significant buildings three to six stories in height which should be preserved. Additional high-rise buildings, particularly in close proximity to the Lake, will have severe and damaging impacts on the visual character and social cohesion of this community and will also degrade the natural environment and open space of Lake Merritt and its adjacent park lands.
Therefore, we urge the City Council to adopt zoning regulations limiting building heights to no more than six(6) stories within 300 feet of Lakeside Drive (measured from the curb side), in this area of the Central Business District.Sincerely,
