To:  President Bush, US Senate, House of Representatives, State Assembly, Governor of California, CA State Senate, CA Members of Congress, CA Dept of Justice-Attorney General, CA Lt. Governor, US Dept of Homeland Security, CA Law Revision Commission

Legal California Citizens stand united to oppose SB-60, the bill that entitles Illegal Immigrants the right to obtain California Driver’s Licenses.

Current Law provides that the Department of Motor Vehicles shall "require every applicant for an original driver's license or identification card to submit satisfactory proof that the applicant's presence in the United States is authorized under federal law," and requires the department to verify the authenticity of any submitted documents. In addition, existing law provides that "the department shall require every application for a driver's license to contain the applicant's social security number and any other number or identifier determined to be appropriate by the department."

Senate Bill 60 would allow persons that do not have legal presence in the United States to be eligible to apply for a driver's license or identification card, and it would permit applicants to substitute a federal taxpayer identification number for a social security number where required by the department. (A "federal taxpayer identification number" is a nine-digit number issued by the Internal Revenue Service for wage and tax reporting purposes to employees that are not eligible to be issued a social security number.)

It is estimated that the passing of this bill will cost taxpayers $65 million dollars.

We urge you to repeal SB-60. The Senate states it is for the road safety of our State. These people should not be here to begin with, they should not be entitled to what we, as American Citizens are entitled to. We are here legally. Our families work hard, pay income taxes and contribute back to our society, yet our Government chooses to ignore the voice of the people and give rights to those who are not entitled to have them; those who have immigrated illegally.

The Senate also stated that these “undocumented” immigrants would know that they couldn’t legally vote, that it would be perjury, so that would keep them from simply checking the “registered voter” box on their driver’s license application. They are already here illegally. I ask you, what’s to stop them from checking that box and voting illegally? Nothing. Once they have a valid driver’s license, is there a way to distinguish between those who are legal and those who are not? No.

In addition, this doesn’t affect California alone. This affects the entire Country. Once someone obtains a valid California Driver’s License, they are able to go to other states and obtain driver’s licenses and residency in those states as well. Where exactly do we draw the line?

The Citizens of California and the United States urge you to repeal this bill.
Sincerely,

The Undersigned
