Relief from Bill c-22 for the Children of Canada |
To: the ATTORNEY GENERAL OF CANADA C/O Patrice Martin, Parliamentary Secretary C-22 Committee: martipa@parl.gc.ca 613-996-1553In 1998, a Bipartisan Joint Parliamentary Committee conducted hearings across
Canada to seek the advice of Canadians to answer the question of how best to
amend the Divorce Act of Canada (1985) to reduce the amount of damage done
to children when their parents separate. The committee's report was called "For
the Sake of the Children", and was read into Parliament. It was withdrawn by then
Justice Minister Ann McLellan in December, 1998.While hundreds of thousands of children continued to suffer, and so many more
were enrolled into this abuse, the government of Canada has obfuscated and
delayed the much needed reform for the last five years. Now it has introduced
Bill C-22, which is now past its second reading in Parliament. C-22 now stands
before committee for its final draft before being passed into law.Bill C-22 abandons all the reforms urged upon the government by Parliament and
the people of Canada, as articulated in "For the Sake of the Children". Instead,
the government attempts to entrench legally quarrelsome, divisive and excessive
points of law, and supplies the legal community with more government funding
at the expense of our children, and to the detriment of the nation. Bill C-22 is an
unwholesome and unwarranted intrusion of the state into the private lives of
citizens. This petition requests the government abandon the abusive clauses of C-22
which leave our children to the tender mercies of the divorce industry. This
petition requires the government to incorporate the 48 recommendations of the
Parliamentary report, "For the Sake of the Children", into Bill C-22. It is the will
of the people and the will of Parliament to immediately implement every child's
inalienable right to the care, comfort and guidance of BOTH of their natural
parents in an equally shared format without discrimination to unjustly favour one
parent over another. No other solution is consistent with the gender equality at law principles of the
Constitution of Canada.Sincerely,
