We, the undersigned, request that the Civic Arena (now known as Mellon Arena) be declared a historical landmark. Anybody with any pride of Pittsburghs history should be appalled by plans to have the arena demolished. Please keep in mind all of the hockey legends that have played in that arena, both home and visiting players. Also important is the arenas history with Disney On Ice, the World Wrestling Federation (World Wrestling Entertainment), the Harlem Globetrotters, the National Wrestling Alliance, the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, as well as Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circuses. Larry Holmes boxed Renaldo Snipes there in a 1981 heavyweight bout. Other boxers who competed at the arena include Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Robinson, Sonny Liston and Floyd Patterson. The arena also hosted such musical legends as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, The Rolling Stones, Garth Brooks, The Grateful Dead, The Beatles, Page/Plant, etc. Several other events with historical significance took place there including the 1983 World Figure Skating Championships. That building is as much a part of Pittsburghs history as any other. Government officials in Pittsburgh should be ashamed of themselves if they stand idly by while allowing the Civic Arena (Mellon Arena) to be destroyed.
