PЙTITION POUR LA DЙFENSE DES LANGUES CLASSIQUES AU PORTUGAL


No seguimento da recente reorganizaзгo da rede escolar e dos agrupamentos de disciplinas, o ensino das lнnguas clбssicas passou a residual nas escolas secundбrias, e em muito poucas, e corre o risco de desaparecer em breve do ensino superior.

Razхes de ordem financeira limitam a oferta das lнnguas clбssicas e das lнnguas e literaturas estrangeiras, tambйm elas em grande perigo em todos os nнveis de ensino, apesar de existir um escol de professores e especialistas, atй de nнvel internacional, constituнdo com grande investimento econуmico e financeiro, em бreas que sгo нndice de desenvolvimento e fazem parte da tradiзгo cultural dos paнses que pretendemos igualar.

Ignorando que a matemбtica e as ciкncias nгo formam cidadгos, como lembrou Manuel Damбsio (Expresso, 10/03/2006), os responsбveis polнticos arriscam-se a privar os jovens portugueses da possibilidade de conhecer as raнzes comuns da identidade nacional e europeia e dos valores que constituem a gйnese do patrimуnio cultural, йtico e cнvico ocidental.

Й este tambйm o parecer do mйdico e professor Nuno Grande, no seu comentбrio a propуsito da heranзa clбssica e do livro de George Steiner, A ideia de Europa (JN, 27/04/2006): a recuperaзгo dos direitos humanos, da solidariedade e da fraternidade com todos os povos, com respeito pelas diferentes identidades culturais ... sгo determinantes da dignificaзгo da Humanidade, a qual se encontra na percepзгo da sabedoria, na demanda do conhecimento desinteressado e na criaзгo da beleza.

Ora, os valores enunciados constituem marca da prуpria identidade europeia, conforme recordou recentemente J. M. Durгo Barroso, Presidente da Comissгo Eurpeia (SIC Notнcias, 13/05/2006), e representam o essencial da formaзгo humanista e clбssica, razгo suficiente para nгo serem eliminados do sistema educativo os seus instrumentos, as lнnguas clбssicas.

Os signatбrios, cujos nomes se seguem, fazem, pois, um apelo aos nossos governantes e а opiniгo pъblica:

- pedimos que nгo reneguem as prуprias raнzes greco-latinas de uma concepзгo nobre da polнtica e da sociedade, йtica e а escala humana;
- reivindicamos o restabelecimento de condiзхes que facultem a todos os jovens a possibilidade de estudarem as lнnguas e as culturas clбssicas em todos os nнveis de ensino, das escolas bбsicas e secundбrias аs politйcnicas e universitбrias.

A PETITION IN FAVOR OF CLASSICAL LANGUAGES IN PORTUGAL

Following the recent reorganization Portuguese school system and the subject groups it offers to students, the teaching of classical languages has been reduced to a residual status in the secondary schools, and has been eliminated in all but a very few of them. It also runs the risk of soon disappearing altogether from the university curriculum.

Financial necessities have limited the offering not only of classical languages, but of foreign languages and literature, which are also in danger at all levels of education. This is in spite of the fact that over the years Portugal has made a major investment of moneys and effort to create an elite cadre of internationally recognized professors and specialists in areas which are an index of development and make up part of the cultural tradition of countries that we would like to equal.

Ignoring the fact that mathematics and sciences do not form citizens, as Manuel Damбsio reminds us (Expresso, 10/03/2006), politicians occupying positions of responsibility risk depriving Portugals younger generations of the possibility of learning about those roots which link our national identity with the wider European identity, and with the values that constitute the origin of the cultural, ethical and civic heritage of the West.

In a recent commentary on our classical inheritance and on George Steiners book, The Idea of Europe (JN, 27/04/2006), Nuno Grande, professor and doctor of medicine, takes this same viewpoint: the recuperation of human rights, of solidarity and fraternity among all peoples, with respect for different cultural identities are factors in the ennoblement of Humanity, all of which is found in the perception of wisdom, the claim for disinterested knowledge and the creation of beauty.

These values, which make part of our European identity as has recently been reminded by J. M. Durгo Barroso, President of the European Commission (SIC Notнcias, 13/05/2006) are essential to the humanist and classical education, sufficient reason for not eliminating the instruments of this education, the classical languages, from the contemporary curriculum.

The signatories, whose names follow below, have made an appeal to our leaders and to public opinion:

- we ask that the Greco-Latin roots of a noble conception of politics and society, which is both ethical and cast on a human scale, not be abrogated;
- we once again argue for the reestablishment of conditions which would give the younger generations the possibility to study classical languages and cultures at all the levels of their education, from primary and secondary schools to the polytechnical schools and universities.

A la suite de la rйcente rйorganisation du rйseau scolaire et des regroupements de disciplines, lenseignement des langues classiques se trouve maintenant а lйtat rйsiduel dans le secondaire, et court le risque de disparaоtre bientфt de lenseignement supйrieur.

Des raisons dordre financier limitent loffre en langues classiques et en langues et littйratures йtrangиres, elles aussi gravement menacйes а tous les niveaux de lenseignement, et ce malgrй lexistence dune йlite denseignants et de spйcialistes, souvent de niveau international, reprйsentant un important investissement йconomique et financier, dans des domaines qui sont un symbole de dйveloppement et qui font partie intйgrante de la tradition culturelle des pays que nous voulons йgaler.

Ignorant que les mathйmatiques et les sciences ne forment pas des citoyens, comme la rappelй le neurobiologiste Manuel Damбsio (Expresso, 10/03/2006), les responsables politiques peuvent-ils priver les jeunes Portugais de la possibilitй de connaоtre les racines communes de lidentitй nationale et europйenne et les valeurs qui constituent la genиse du patrimoine culturel, йthique et civique de lOccident?

Cest ce que rappelle le professeur de mйdecine Nuno Grande, dans son commentaire а propos de lhйritage classique et du livre de George Steiner, Lidйe dEurope (JN, 27/04/2006): les droits humains, la fraternitй, la solidaritй avec tous les peuples, dans le respect des diffйrentes identitйs culturelles sont dйterminants pour lйlйvation de lHumanitй, qui se fonde sur laspiration а la sagesse, la soif de connaissance dйsintйressйe et la crйation de la beautй.

Or, de telles valeurs origine et garantie mкme de lidentitй europйenne, comme la rappelй rйcemment J. M. Durгo Barroso, Prйsident de la Comission Europйenne (SIC Notнcias, 13/05/2006) rassemblent lessentiel de la formation humaniste et classique, raison suffisante pour que ne soient pas йliminйs du systиme йducatif leurs instruments : les langues classiques.

Les signataires, dont les noms suivent, lancent donc un appel а nos dirigeants, en prenant а tйmoin lopinion publique:

- nous leur demandons de ne pas renier les origines grйco-latines dune conception noble de la politique et de la sociйtй, йthique et а lйchelle humaine;
- nous revendiquons la mise en place de conditions rendant accessible а tous lйtude des langues et des cultures classiques, quel que soit le niveau denseignement, de lйcole primaire а luniversitй.
