Changing the Standards

To:  U.S. Congress

Today our educational system is in danger. In 2008 the US high school drop out rate has increased to nearly 50%. This means that 50% of the teenagers in the United States will drop out of high school. The main reason why our students are no longer eager to learn or attend school is because of the standardized testing. The TAKS test, Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Standards, was administered to 20 adults. The 20 adults consisted of the following:
• 5 w/ doctoral degrees; 2 professors
• 5 w/ master degrees; 1 teacher
• 5 w/ bachelor degrees; 2 teachers
• 5 w/ only with high school diplomas

Out of the 20 adults only 42% of them passed this test. 15% out of the 42% of the adults that did pass had upper level degrees. Let me break this down: 8 adults passed the TAKS tests out of those 8 only 2 people had graduate degrees (i.e. master’s or doctoral degree). It is time that we let our government know that there is time for a change in our education system. It is time that we get back to the basics and begin to teach children how to survive after high school. This petition is only to show that we do believe it is time to change the way our children enter into their future.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned
