Stop the Torture of Egyptian Christians

The Coptic Orthodox Church, as well as Christians from all denominations and those who are against such things would like to express their deepest distress amd regret as a result of the incident which occurred in St. Abou Fanan Monastery on 31st. May 2008 jn Egypt.

This Christian Monastery dates back to the 4th century and is home to quite a number of Monks and Novices. It was attacked by Islamic extremists, who tortured the Monks, including breaking their legs, cutting off their ears, tying them and having a donkey drag them along the ground and evenusing firearms against them.

This was done without the local police force reacting to protect the monastery in reasonable time.

We therefore request that the government take the following actions:

1.Immediately release all Christians that were falsely arrested.
2.Press charges and arrest the people who tortured the Monks and Novices, as they are a threat to the peace and unity of both Egyptian and global societies.
3.Assist the Church in rebuilding both the monastery and its fence, including police protection of all workers.
4.Compensating the monastery for damages which occurred while being under Egyptian government protection.

We trust that this petition will create awareness of this occurance and that it will have a positive influence on future actions taken by the government and His Ecellency President Mubarek, whom we all extend our love to.

We would hope that any future incidents will result in the Egyptian Government taking swifter actions to arrest anyone who threatens the peace and unity of Egyptian society, particularly Islamic extremists who continue to terrorize the Christian community in Egypt.
