Save the classical musicians of Covent Garden |
***UPDATE*** In a meeting with Capco on Monday 31st April we were informed that, though the proposed 50% cut in performances has been withdrawn, they are planning to open a shop directly behind the pitch ANYWAY, so ultimately we will lose our performance space ENTIRELY. We would also like to highlight the comments made by Petition signatory 5324 Carlo Poggiali: "This is absolutely disgraceful - how can this huge publicly quoted company with massive resources destroy Covent Garden unchallenged. IF YOU CARE ABOUT THE DECIMATION OF COVENT GARDEN MARKET/MUSICIANS/STREET PERFORMERS - MAKE YOUR FEELINGS KNOWN TO THEM PERSONALLY - CALL MR ALEXANDER NICOLL - HEAD OF CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY - LIBERTY INTERNATIONAL PLC - 40 BROADWAY, LONDON,SW1H OBT - TEL 02079601200 OR EMAIL - feedback@lib-int.com. ITS TIME TO TAKE A STAND."
To: Liberty International/CapcoI pledge my support to the tradition of classical buskers in Covent Garden, London, whose livelihoods are currently under threat.
In a move to significantly reduce street performance in Covent Garden Market, the owners (Liberty International/Capco) have announced that they will cut performances by 50\% as of April 2008.
If this reduction in schedule goes ahead, the highly trained classical musicians and opera singers will no longer be able to sustain a living from this specialized form of street entertainment. As a result, the only dedicated classical music pitch in the world will be no more. This will end a wonderful and unique tradition that has long been a reason for people to visit the area.
Sincerely,
