Cuban-American Letter

To:  President Bush

Early this month, hurricane Dennis slammed into Cuba, causing disaster in 1/6 of the island, the death of 16 people, and the partial or total destruction of over 140,000 homes. Thousands of women, children, elderly and physically challenged people are now lacking food, water, and electricity.

In response to this tragedy, Pastors for Peace and other people of faith have shown a compassionate and generous side of Americans. They have attempted to bring much needed assistance to the Cuban People, but their attempts are being met with confiscations of donations at the hands of Customs and Homeland Security officers.

For us as Cuban Americans, this situation has been further exacerbated by the current curtailments on family visits as well as the severe restrictions on sending financial and material assistance to our families on the island.

Mr. President, in the wake of this devastating hurricane, lift the restrictions on sending assistance to Cuba and let us be free to nurture our love for family and friends - it is in America’s best interest.

A principios del mes de julio, el huracán Dennis azotó a Cuba, causando desastres en una sexta parte de la Isla, la muerte de 16 personas, y la destrucción parcial o total de más de 140,000 viviendas. Miles de mujeres, niños, ancianos y personas con retos de discapacidad hoy se enfrentan a carencias de comida, agua y electricidad.

En respuesta a esta tragedia, los Pastores por La Paz y otras personas de fe demuestran un aspecto compasivo y generoso del pueblo estadounidense. Ellos han intentado llevar ayuda que hoy es muy necesitada por el pueblo cubano, pero sus intentos se enfrentan a confiscaciones de donaciones por agentes de la Aduana y oficiales del Homeland Security (Seguridad de la Patria) de Estados Unidos.

Para nosotros como cubanos estadounidenses, esta situación se extrema aún más por las limitaciones de visitas familiares al igual que las severas restricciones impuestas sobre el envío de ayuda financiera y material a nuestros seres queridos en la Isla.

Señor Presidente Bush, después del paso de este devastador huracán, quite las restricciones al envío de ayuda a Cuba y permítanos ser libres para nutrir nuestro amor hacia familiares y amigos – hágalo por los mejores intereses de la Nación.
