Every year, at the Academy Awards ceremony, honorary Oscars are given to those who have significantly contributed to film history and the art of film. These have included many actors, directors, and technicians in the later years of their lives, long past the highlights of their craft. But in recent years, according to a February 17, 2008 Washington Post article written by Ann Hornaday, one man has been overlooked for such an honor. Roger Corman, who has made 400 films in over 52 years, not only made many achievements in the past but still continues to work. Corman was able to make well-made films at low cost, gave Vincent Price some of his best work in the Edgar Allen Poe adaptations, and gave many in the "New Hollywood" their first start. These stars include Jack Nicholson, Peter Fonda, Bruce Dern, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, John Sayles, and at least 40 others. Corman exemplified the independent filmmaker before there was ever a term for it. Therefore, I support and advocate that the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences award Roger Corman an honorary Oscar in 2010.
