Allow Last Rites Administered to Death Row Inmates |
To: OklahomansCurrent Oklahoma Law does not allow death row inmates to have physical contact with people outside of the prison system, ie., visitors, priests, etc. This practice prohibits Catholic inmates from receiving the Last Rites of the Roman Catholic Church. Freedom of religion should be honored in prison, even though many other civic rights have been stripped from these inmates.
We petition the State of Oklahoma to allow these death row inmates one physical visit with a Catholic priest specifically to receive the last rites. We understand that there is usually a chaplain available for prayer and consultation, however, Catholics must receive the last rites only from an ordained Catholic priest and physical contact is necessary for this. Catholics must be allowed one last chance to "get right with God" before their death sentences are carried out.Sincerely,
