Silence The Ringing: End Telemarketing Calls

I believe that my home environment is sacred. Telemarketing phone calls are a nuisance beyond the sales pitch; they are noise pollution in my home. While I am taking a nap, eating dinner or enjoying a book silence is extremely important to me. It is an injustice that my private home environment is invaded with an annoying telephone ring. It is a nuisance that I have to put down what I am doing and get up to go to a telephone, reach over to a telephone, look at a caller ID box or have my sense of tranquility and relaxation shattered by the phone ringing.

I want to have control over my home environment to the extent that I want to prevent my phone from ever being rung by a telemarketing phone call.

Because cell phones are charged by the minute for all calls including incoming calls, tele-marketers are prohibited from making calls to them by the Telephone Consumer Protection Act of 1991. The way that tele-marketers avoid making these calls is by a database filter applied to the prefixes assigned to cell phones. A prefix is not your area code but the first three digits of your phone number, Ex. 555-222-1212 "222" is the prefix.

By signing this petition I am asking congress to amend the Telephone Consumer Protection Act of 1991 (TCPA) to include language that requires phone companies to provide consumers with prefixes designated as "do not call". And further amending the TCPA to prohibit tele-marketing firms from calling numbers with a “do not call” prefix and face a penalty of $2,000 per call placed to a "do not call" prefix.
