SAVE OUR CITY COMMITTEE HERITAGE PETITION
TO: THE EXECUTIVE MAYOR, NELSON MANDELA BAY METRO
THE MINISTER OF ARTS & CULTURE
THE CHAIRPERSON SOUTH AFRICAN HERITAGE RESOURCE AUTHORITY
THE SPEAKER - EASTERN CAPE PROVINCIAL LEGISLATURE
As a concerned citizen of the Nelson Mandela Bay metro, I am cognisant of the fact that the National Heritage Resources Act of 1999 recognises that every generation has a moral responsibility to act as trustee of our national heritage for succeeding generations
and
that the state has a legal obligation to manage heritage resources in the
interests of all South Africans. I am further aware that this Act legally binds the state to act in these interests.
Accordingly I demand:
That immediate action be taken to stop the ongoing degradation of our built heritage in the Central precinct in Port Elizabeth, and that appropriate measures be taken to ensure the restoration of neglected heritage buildings and further that appropriate steps be taken against negligent owners to compel the restoration of neglected heritage buildings.
