Love in the Afternoon. A lovely concept, no? One that millions of soap fans grew accustomed to, back in the day when soaps were rocking Daytime, bringing in ratings networks could be proud of. We hear all the time about how the genre is failing, and while no one really knows either way what‘s happening to soaps (Are they coming or going? It‘s all speculation.), there are indeed glaring examples of why that might be true. Why fans are losing interest. Perhaps the concept that once drew fans in has been lost. Well, at least on one soap in particular: General Hospital, aka General Mobspital.

Yes, some romance still remains. But it’s a shame when it’s taken a secondary role to that of violence, which is always present on this particular Daytime drama. The leading characters are either mobsters or are involved with mobsters in some way. People are dying left and right. And as sad as all of that is, it wouldn’t even be as bad if there was actual balance at the backbone, the heart of the operation. So many people tape and fast forward through segment after segment, just to avoid what the show has become: a ghost of it’s former self. Why you might ask? Because women (the majority of your audience) don’t want to see people getting shot and then getting away with it! Or children taking hits for their Mob King daddies only to be put in comas for the rest of their lives. It’s not entertaining. It’s predictable. It’s cold, dark and dreary. Soaps aren’t supposed to be all about love and happiness, but it shouldn’t be an afterthought either.

Which brings us to our main point of this letter: what happened to all the love scenes? The full, three to five minute long scenes that celebrated the very couples that make up the show, make viewers tune in? Especially for one couple in particular: Patrick and Robin Drake!

Patrick and Robin have been together (more or less) since December 2005. Their first (and only) love scene was their first time on May 29, 2006. It is now January 2009 and we’ve yet to get another love scene for this couple. A fade to black here and there? Sure. But that was back in the summer of 2008 - on Night Shift 2. What about GH? These are two young, beautiful people. Sexy, with smoking hot chemistry that most other couples can’t and won’t ever touch, because it’s so rare! So, what gives? What’s it going to take? Do they need to look good? Check. Do they need to be in love? Check. Do they need to be newlyweds? Check.

May 2009 will mark three years since their only love scene! On a soap opera! Something is just not right with that. Carly and Jax have been together just as long as Patrick and Robin and have had at least three love scenes, not counting fade to blacks. It’s really quite sad and enough is enough. Now we have Robin’s PPD that’s going to make her not want to be intimate with Patrick, her new husband, who she probably hasn’t been with since October of last year (we wouldn’t know, because the show doesn’t even acknowledge that they have a sex life anymore). There’s no telling when the next opportunity will present itself, but we hope it’s worth the wait.

Patrick and Robin have been through so much together over the past three years. They’ve had their ‘no strings’ sex phase (which even then amounted to the one and only love scene), they broke up and got back together., fell in love and admitted it to one another (with no love scene or implied love scene after being together almost an entire year), broke up and got back together some more, Robin got pregnant (again, just a kiss, no love scene or implied love scene), they got engaged (after a long struggle), had a baby and got married and NONE OF THOSE THINGS warranted a love scene? It’s craziness. It makes no sense at all. Zero. It’s time for another one. Or two. Or three.

It’s a bit ironic that out of all the things out there, we’re formulating this petition for a love scene for a couple on a soap opera, but it’s happening. What else can we do? We just want to be heard. Soap fans like us want romance and love and intimate scenes between our favorite couples that all but set our television screens on fire because that’s the appeal. What draws us in. Finding it, getting it back and keeping it is what in turn will keep us glued to our seats at the appropriate hour, every weekday. Bring back the romance! The sexiness! At least for Patrick and Robin Drake!!! After all, they are the best of the best, the most wonderfully spectacular couple out there today! Who wouldn’t want to see them in a love scene on a regular basis? They’re hot! It’s really quite simple.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned
