Rename West Smithfield: Wat Tyler Rise

To:  City of London Corporation

We wish West Smithfield (London, EC1) to be renamed: Wat Tyler Rise.

Wat Tyler, leader of the Peasants’ Revolt, died at a spot in West Smithfield in 1381.

There is no memorial to Wat in the City of London. Wat’s demand was that all should, “be free and of one condition”. He is therefore a founder of democracy in Britain. His importance should be permanently marked where he perished defending liberty.

The signatories to this petition call upon the City of London Corporation to reverse their decision (April 2008) to refuse a change in name of West Smithfield to ‘Wat Tyler Rise’.
