We hereby represent East Carolina Scholars to petition our University Chancellors for reconsidering the removal of Dr. Michael Bassman from his current position as Director of East Carolina Scholars Program.

East Carolina University Honors Program has blossomed under the leadership and direction of Dr. Bassman who has worked tirelessly in recruiting and expanding our programs through the years. Dr. Bassman has raised the bar for East Carolina Scholars by implementing programs that encourage scholars to broaden their university experience through leadership and service programs. We are now on the same academic footing as some of our “more prominent” academic institutions in the state. Dr. Bassman encourages East Carolina Scholars to go beyond the boundary of our campus and carry our Pirate Pride. Through his guidance, scholars have been able to successfully compete for summer research stipends and fellowships around the country, such as Princeton University’s flagship Lewis-Sigler Genomic Institute Molecular Biology Department and The National Institute of Health. He has sought financial support for our study abroad program to raise our awareness and appreciation of cultural diversity. Our East Carolina Scholar graduates have also recently won the prestigious Barry Goldwater Award. We boast a tradition of high academic achievement producing medical doctors, businessmen and women, research scientists and educators who dedicate themselves to be leaders in their own fields to serve our communities in Eastern North Carolina.


The recent announcement of changing direction and personnel in the East Carolina Scholars Program, especially removing Dr. Bassman from Directorship, without first consulting our opinions or discussing with our East Carolina Scholars Leadership is inconsistent with the East Carolina Scholars education philosophy, which intends to train students to be leaders. The following undersigned would request that East Carolina University Administration to suspend any changes to our East Carolina Scholars Program and to have open dialogue with our student representatives before further changes are made that would have such a great impact on the education of our students.
