Free Kobra Najjar and stop stoning in Iran

To:  His Excellency Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran and His Excellency Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi, Head of Judiciary

As fellow Muslims we appeal to you on behalf of Kobra Najjar to stop her execution.

Kobra Najjar is an abused Iranian woman whose husband subjected her to years of systematic violence and forced her into prostitution to sustain his heroin addiction. She has served an 8 year sentence for being an accessory to her husband’s murder and is now under sentence of death by stoning for the crime of adultery - the prostitution her abusive husband forced upon her.

Women in Iran are disproportionately charged with sexual offences and sentenced to stoning, flogging or hanging.

Islam does not punish those who have been exploited when they should instead have been protected from abuse. We appeal to you to release Kobra Najjar, abolish stoning and flogging, and address issues of discrimination against women, which lead to miscarriages of justice and unfair punishments for women.
