To:  President Dynes and Mr. Howard Pripas

WHEREAS it has been proven and demonstrated conclusively that there is a 33% pay inequity for UC Library Assistants; and

WHEREAS a neutral arbitrator issued a fact-finding report on February 17, 2005 as part of the collective bargaining process which found that UC Library Assistants should be brought up to parity with UC "blank" Assistants; and

WHEREAS the neutral arbitrator noted that "there is no question that the University is in a position to afford a wage increase for the clerical employees...the University's claim that it does not have the money to spend on them is not supported by the evidence"; and

WHEREAS UC has failed to use the unrestricted non-state funds available to fund clerical salaries and instead diverted $20 million earmarked for clerical wage increases in 2003/04 to other purposes; and

WHEREAS the full cost for achieving parity for the 760 Library Assistants at UC system-wide would be less than $4 million; and

WHEREAS UC collective bargaining representatives instead offered an insignificant and insulting 0.25% increase wage parity adjustment;

WE therefore call upon the University to make the funding available for a modest 14% increase sought as a step toward wage parity for UC Library Assistants immediately.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned
