Prosecute Crimes Against Humanity in East Timor

Your Excellency,



Recalling that Indonesia illegally invaded the national territory of East Timor in 1975 and continuously and illegally occupied that territory until 1999;

Recalling that during the illegal occupation, widespread crimes against humanity and human rights violations were committed by the Indonesian state and its proxies against the people of East Timor;

Considering that the national judicial processes in Indonesia to prosecute, convict and punish Indonesian citizens accused of committing those crimes and violations have not secured justice in respect of those crimes and violations;

Considering that it is the responsibility of the international community to pursue perpetrators of crimes against humanity and human rights violations, wherever and whenever having committed;

We, the persons who have hereunder subscribed our names to this Petition, do hereby petition Your Excellency to undertake with the utmost urgency all measures that you are competent to take in relation to the establishment of an international criminal tribunal to try citizens of Indonesia who stand accused of committing grave crimes against humanity and human rights violations in East Timor during the period of the above mentioned illegal occupation.
