Campaign against Turkish membership in EU

We, the people and friends of Europe, declare here our firm objection to the Turkish plans to join the European Union.


We are against Turkish membership cause:

- Turkey is culturally and historically NOT a European country. It is not accepted as European country by most Europeans, and it will never be.
- Only European countries should be part of European Union. EU is not a Union of all democracies, nor only a Union of values, it´s a European Union and Turkey is culturally and historically not European. Only the people of Europe have to decide which country is accepted as European country and member of EU, not politicians nor foreigners.
- We would have to much immigration from Turkey to Europe, or we would have to close the borders between all EU members, cause all states must be handled equal.
- Turkey has an unstable and unreliable economy.
- Turkey’s main landmass is in Asia.
- Turkey’s average annual income is far below EU average.
- The Orient and the Islam are not part of Europe, and the most Europeans don’t want to have Turkish or Arab countries in European Union.
- Turkey has a very high population growth rate.
- Today we have circa 3% Moslems in the Union; With Turkish membership we would have more than 16%, and this rate would keep growing very fast to 20% or more. This would have impact to the policy of European Union, and this would harm the acceptance of European Union.
- Turkey illegally occupies more than the half of Cyprus. Since May 1st 2004 this is territory of EU, and so Turkey has thousands of occupation troops on EU soil.
- Turkey discriminates and tortures Kurdish minority in Turkey which amounts 20% of the country’s total population.
- Turkey has been violating Human Rights for centuries and it keeps doing it. (Source: UN)
- Literacy rates in Turkey are far below European Standards: more than 22% of Turkish women are illiterate (Source: CIA Country facts)


We believe that the Turkish membership would harm our Union:

- The integration process would stop.

- The little European feeling that exists today in Europe would fade away.

- More and more European people would turn against the EU. Some European countries would leave this Union.

- Unemployment would rise as more than 70 million Turks would be able to work freely in our Union.

- We would have to reduce the aid to some of our poor EU regions in order to give priority to Turkey’s ruined economy.

- Turkey would be among the most important decision makers in the Union since it would be one of the most populated members.

- There are huge security risks: The EU borders would extend to one of the most unstable and dangerous areas of the planet. Turkey has borders with some of the most unsafe countries in the Middle East. With Turkey in the Union it will be much easier for drug and weapon smugglers to reach Europe.

- More political Freedom in Turkey helps the Islamic conservatives and fundamentalists.


European leaders had no democratic legitimacy to start accession negotiations with Turkey.
European citizens were allways against Turkish membership, and the European Treaties state clearly that any EUROPEAN State that shares the values can join the Union. Turkey is neither a European State nor does it share our values.

We, the citizens of Europe, call our leaders to refuse to accept Turkey as a member.

We are in favour of Turkey’s partnership with the EU. We are in favour of humanitarian and financial aid to Turkey.

But we say NO to Turkish full membership!
We do not consider Turks Europeans!
We do not want any non-europeans countries in the European Union!
