Place back the NC-17 option for FanFiction.net |
To: FanFiction.net staffOn behalf of the fanfiction.net community, I would like to ask that we have the NC-17 category back up and running.
Fanfiction.net, since its establishment, has always been a place where one could express oneself though works of fiction. Whether it is fan fiction, or original fiction, it was a place for writers of all kinds to express themselves with no restriction.
"Unleash your imagination and free your soul"
This is the Fanfiction.net motto. However, as of September 12, 2002, this motto has become a lie.
"NC-17 based entries will no longer be accepted. Though they are very small portion of the site the adult stories have generated almost all of the complaints filed on record in the past year. Moreover, the highest concentrations of them are growing in areas with subjects targeted to younger readers and with increasingly controversial subject matters. However, not all NC-17 based stories fall into the description but as result of their increasing volume a decision has been made to resolve this problem. Innocent writers will be affected but this has to be done considering the non-filtering scheme of the site. "
This is an outrage. We as writers are suffering because of reader’s blatant disregard for warnings. Any work of fiction that falls into the NC-17 category is CLEARLY marked and labeled. Every work of this nature is optional to read. Months ago, Fanfiction.net installed a PG-13 default, making it impossible for any work of NC-17 nature to be found, unless one were to change the default settings.
By removing the NC-17 option, this is mocking, offending, and insulting writers everywhere. If a reader stumbled upon a piece of fiction that is clearly marked as NC-17, it is purely his or her own choice to read. If they read it, it's their own fault and they have no right whatsoever to complain to the staff at Fanfiction.net.
We, as writers who are at Fanfiction.net, understand that it is a difficult decision to deal with reader complaints, however, by taking away the NC-17 option it has done nothing but anger and offend.
We will not take this! We want our voices heard!
I am angered, offended and outraged by this new development. It is not our fault as writers to get the punishment for readers who cannot obey warnings.
Fanfiction.net is a place where writers can express themselves any way they choose, and allow their works to be commented upon, in hopes for better writing skills. As of today, September 12, 2002, that freedom of expression, the ability to "unleash your mind and free your soul" has been disregarded and taken away abruptly.
We want the NC-17 category of Fanfiction.net back up and running!
I thank you for your time. It is my sincerest wishes that you take this petition into account and seriously consider my position as well as all the writers out there who are deeply offended and outraged by this.
Sincerely,
