Keep Manukau's Pools Free

We the undersigned strongly urge the Manukau City Council to reverse recent steps taken to introduce user-charges at public pools in the city.

Manukau’s public pools are an important recreational facility. They provide a safe and healthy leisure activity for many city residents, in particular children. Council’s own research shows that user charges will reduce the number of residents using public pools.

We reject the creep of user charges. It is an established principle that residents pay for the provision of local facilities through their property rates. It is unreasonable for residents to be charged to use facilities that they have already paid to build and maintain.

We note with particular concern the impact that user charges will have on the ability of those with fixed incomes, such as working families and pensioners, to access Manukau’s public pools.

We call on Council to immediately reverse this policy.
