Keep Maurice Benard/Sonny Corinthos in a top burner storyline on General Hospital

There are many rumors spreading across the Internet concerning the future
of Maurice Benard who portrays mobster Sonny Corinthos on General Hospital (GH). It is my hope Mr. Benard will be treated with the loyalty and respect he deserves by his employers. He has delivered popular story-lines and characters for ABC since 1987. Mr. Benard has been part of THREE super-couples for ABC: Nico & Cecily on All My Children (AMC) and Sonny and Brenda and Sonny and Carly ( both on GH). In the seven years he has been with GH, he has put his heart and soul into the character of Sonny Corinthos by delivering knock-out performances which have made Sonny one of the most interesting and beloved characters in all of Daytime TV. Mr. Benard is a professional who is respected by his peers and supportive of his co-stars. In addition, Maurice has been supportive of ABC and GH and in good faith just signed a two year contract.

Mr Benard is a talented ensemble actor (as he proved recently in his scenes with Genie Francis and Kin Shriner)and is excellent doing either comedy or drama. However, for the past few years his character has been isolated from almost everyone on the show and his storyline now consists of Carly, Michael, Mike, Alexis, Jason and Johnny. Now, three of the actors who portray those characters are leaving the show and that leaves Sonny in a
corner by himself. It is time to get Sonny integrated into other storylines, such as: patching up his friendship with Luke, makeing Sonny and Alexis distant cousins who team them up to battle Helena and Stefan, making him a half brother or sister to Taggart or Gia, or give Sonny the child he has always wanted. I would prefer rather than having Carly leave Sonny or die in a violent way, that the character be re-cast (perhaps after a few months--some danger precipitating Carly's leaving Port Charles for safety and her return as a recast)so we don't see Sonny blaming himself for another failed relationship or death. Sonny took a great leap of faith to marry Carly and it would be a shame to invalidate that love and trust he has for Carly and destroy Sonny's character growth by having Carly leave Sonny or die.

I have never enjoyed an actor on GH more than I have Maurice Benard, or a character as much as Sonny Corinthos. I want to see him front and center on GH. If Mr. Benard is not handled with the respect he deserves then I wouldn't hesitate to follow him to another soap in a second if he thought that to be in his best interest.
