Petition on death of student porotesters in Cameroon |
To: Cameroon Prime Ministerr and Head of Government, Chief Ephraim InoniBetween April 2005 and October 2008, in the Southwest Province of Cameroon eight people were killed during demonstrations by students of the University of Buea and Secondary and High School students in Kumba. These students were agitating for a better academic environment, but were confronted by law enforcement officers who quickly opened fire on them with live ammunition, killing some and seriously injuring many others. This amounts to an excessive use of force by law enforcement officials.
Your government, as usual, created Commissions of Inquiry to investigate the brutality and killings, but to date the findings of the commissions are yet to be made public. The bruised families continue grieve over their lost children, while neither the officers responsible nor their supriors have been reprimanded. While such impunity persists, no lessons will be learnt from this incident, and such tragedies will recur.
Cameroon is a signatory to various international treaties which guarantee the right to life of all persons, and Cameroon posits to be a state of law.
Global Conscience Initiative therefore beseeches your government to, with immediate effect:
• publish the findings of the Committees of Investigation,
• prosecute those suspected of being responsible for the deaths of the eight students (including law enforcement officials and their superiors) and sanction them according to existing laws, and
• meet and compensate the families of the deceased victims as well as all others who suffered severe injuries.
Your Excellency’s government’s mandate over the Cameroonian people will only be regarded as truly legitimate when the world sees that you provide justice for ALL Cameroonians.
Sincerely,
