This petition is addressed to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation and concerns the matter of the induction of the group Genesis to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Genesis has been eligible for induction for several years but the voting committee has not inducted the band to date. The undersigned feel that this is a serious omission and have signed this petition to bring the matter to the attention of the Foundation.
Genesis emerged out of the progressive rock genre in the late 1960s and early 1970s. During the 1970s, the band turned in several pieces of work that are still considered classics of the genre, including the epic song, "Supper's Ready" and albums such as "Foxtrot", "Selling England by the Pound", "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway", "A Trick of the Tail" and "Wind & Wuthering".
Not content to rest on its laurels as established giants of prog rock, the band continued to evolve and update its sound through the 1980s and 1990s. In the process they enjoyed longevity rivaled perhaps by only the Rolling Stones among major rock acts. As far as peers in the progressive rock area, only Pink Floyd and perhaps Yes have had the same level of success. Genesis, however, widened its appeal, attracting fans from mainstream rock as well as other areas of music. Genesis refused to become repetitive, unlike many of its contemporaries, constantly reinventing itself to such a degree that many new fans of the group's music were not aware of earlier critical successes the band had.
The members of the group also distinguished themselves individually over the past 30 plus years. This includes: Peter Gabriel, widely acknowledged as an innovator in music and a major advocate of world music and integration of various cultures through music; Steve Hackett, who has established himself as a skillful rock and classical guitarist; and Phil Collins, perhaps one of the top drummers in the field of rock music ever. It is difficult to think of a group whose members have had the same degree of success (save perhaps the Beatles) collectively and individually, critically and commercially.
In closing, the Undersigned humbly submit this petition to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation for serious consideration in support of the induction of the band Genesis (Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, Anthony Phillips, Steve Hackett, Phil Collins, et al).
