We, the undersigned, appeal for your approval of a bilateral agreement that would require documentation for cultural objects coming into the United States that may have been illegally exported from Greece.

Widespread looting has resulted in an irreparable loss of knowledge about Greek history. For example, 90\% of the known Early Bronze Age objects from the Cycladic islands of Greece have no archaeological provenience, and it is estimated that 85\% of Early Cycladic sites have been looted.

The best way to understand Greek cultural artifacts is within their archaeological, architectural and historical contexts, when they have been scientifically examined and professionally preserved.

We feel strongly that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Hellenic Republic would allow the U.S. Government to help curb the illicit antiquities market, stop the looting of cultural monuments of Greece, and preserve our shared past.
