Removal of the Word "Try" From the Girl Scout Promise |
To: Girl Scouts of the USAThe purpose of this petition is to remove the word "try" form the Girl Scout Promise. The word "try," in the opinion of the undersigned, implies a half-hearted attempt to complete a task and gives those who use the word and excuse for failure.
The current Girl Scout Promise is:
Oh my honor, I will try:
To serve God and my country,
To help people at all times,
And to live by the Girl Scout Law.
It is the opinion of those undersigned that the word "try" should be removed from the above promise. The undersigned believe that a promise is an oath that will be carried out, rather that a whim that might be carried out if one finds it convenient. There is no reason, in the opinion of the undersigned, that a Girl Scout cannot "do" the tasks promised.
The following is a proposed alternative to the current Promise:
On my honor I will:
Serve God and my country,
Help people at all times,
and live by the Girl Scout Law.Sincerely,
