Help NC's Homeless Animals & No-Kill Shelters |
To: Department of Agriculture & North Carolina LegislatureNorth Carolina currently is third in the nation in the number of homeless companion animals it kills each year. This statistic is a concern for a large number of North Carolina’s citizens. County and local governments do not have the fiscal resources to adequately deal with this problem. To combat this crisis in our state, many counties depend upon private organizations to rehome animals, provide for their veterinary care, and to create spay/neuter programs to help eliminate this problem in the future.
The new Animal Welfare Act regulations recently approved by the Department of Agriculture will force private shelters to exhaust their resources not on animal care, but on large-scale and unnecessary facility renovations. The net effect will be to force most if not all to close their doors, resulting in an increase in already alarming euthanasia rates.
We, the undersigned, respectfully request that the North Carolina Legislature investigate this matter and return control of animal welfare to the counties who already have animal welfare statues, cruelty investigators and animal control departments available to regulate and partner with local rescue groups.
By signing below, I certify that I am a citizen of North Carolina, over the age of 18, and residing at the address included.
Sincerely,
