The New NHL is Not What We Want

Dear NHL Board of Governors,

By signing this petition, I am stating that:

• I am dissatisfied with the current product the NHL is offering. The “New NHL” is an emotionless brand of hockey that I cannot and will not support. The “New NHL” has driven away countless hockey traditionalists and average hockey fans.
• There are too many pointless penalties called in the “New NHL” that create a game that has very little flow for me, the fan. These pointless penalties suck the intensity from the game, thus making it a boring product to watch.
• I want rivalries back in hockey. The last rivalry I can recall was in 1997 (Detroit vs. Colorado). I am disgusted that I have not been able to anticipate an intense, hard-fought NHL game for nearly ten years.
• Emotion-filled hockey fights are a must for the NHL. The league should abolish the instigator rule and allow hockey players to police themselves and earn the reputations that were once accurate (e.g. “hockey tough”).
• Gary Bettman is a poor ambassador for hockey and should not be retained at the end of his 2007-2008 contract. While Mr. Bettman has been instrumental in filling the pockets of team owners, the overwhelming majority of fans are appalled that he has been allowed to retain his position while the NHL continues on an out-of-control downward spiral. Mr. Bettman has exercised poor judgment in the selection of cities for relocation, the selection of Versus as the NHL’s premier television partner, moving forward with a season long strike, going against popular fan opinion by introducing new uniforms for all teams, and creating a style of game that is not appealing to average hockey fans.
• The NHL should be marketed toward average hockey fans… fans that value emotion-filled fights, heated games, and rivalries every bit as much as they value a crisp pass, a highlight reel goal, and/or a spectacular save.

In closing, I am telling the NHL’s Board of Governors that I am tasking them, personally, with bringing back a brand of hockey that is appealing to ALL hockey fans.
