Genocide and Holocaust Education |
To: PA state legislatureMarch 31, 2009
Dear Pennsylvania State Legislators:
The global economic downturn, and the associated decrease in quality of life for some socio-economic classes, could lead to the same hatred and violence that has served as the foundation for atrocities during the Holocaust and other genocides. As the current socio-economic crisis increases in scope and impact, so does the desperation of people in Pennsylvania and around the world. Simultaneously, the community of Holocaust survivors and witnesses to an oft-denied period in history is dwindling.
With this concern in mind, it is vital that legislators revisit HB 297 and include stronger language that emphasizes the urgent importance of teacher, student and community education with incentives and penalties in place. Pennsylvania House Bill 297, introduced in 1996, was directed to encourage the teaching of the Holocaust and genocide education in public, private and parochial schools.
However, the bill was missing vital elements to make it effective. Pennsylvania legislators must realize that without proper education to learn acceptance of racial, religious, socio-economic and cultural diversity, children may learn to hate. It is imperative that appropriate resources and specific sensitivity training be provided for the teachers who will impart this instruction.
As a member of the General Assembly, you are in an ideal position to champion this cause on behalf of those who have died because of hate-inspired violence. The undersigned agree that HB 297 does not properly address the importance of teaching tolerance, and therefore request that you introduce new legislation to strengthen Holocaust and genocide education in public, private, and parochial schools.
Thank you for your clear and continuing commitment to the education and well-being of our state’s citizens.
Sincerely,
Concerned Pennsylvanians
