Petition to Protect Legalized Same Sex Marriage in Ontario Canada to the House of Commons in Parliament Assembled, Ottawa, Canada |
To: House of Commons, Canadian GovernmentPETITION TO PROTECT LEGALIZED SAME SEX MARRIAGE IN ONTARIO, CANADA
to the HOUSE OF COMMONS IN PARLIAMENT ASSEMBLED, OTTAWA, CANADA
Following the Ontario Court of Appeal ruling June 10th, 2003 which legalised same sex marriage in the province of Ontario, Canada, The Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) Mr. Joe Tascona, in Barrie, Ontario, Canada designed and posted in his local constituency office a discriminatory and hateful anti lesbian and gay petition asking the Canadian government to overturn the Ontario Court of Appeal decision. Furthermore his petition asks the federal government to define marriage as the “exclusive domain of a man and woman” and states that a man and woman are the only “family” that exists. Mr. Tascona has made this petition available to the public by posting it in his constituency office and inviting the public to sign it via media (television and newspaper) interviews. Tascona has also told media that he is merely representing the views of his constituencies.
In response to his prejudicial petition and misleading interviews, a supportive, pro same sex marriage petition was presented to Tascona at his Barrie, Ontario office. The petition gives supporters of same sex marriage and the members of the gay and lesbian community a voice, and equal opportunity for representation by their MPP.
Mr. Tascona refused to post the pro same sex marriage petition in his local office and refused to remove the anti same sex marriage petition from his office.
Members of the lesbian and gay community in Ontario are appalled by the discriminatory, anti human rights attitude, beliefs and actions of the MPP Mr. Joe Tascona.
Please join us in showing support for the favourable same sex marriage ruling by the Ontario Court of Appeal and protecting this basic human right of lesbian and gay citizens: the right to legally marry whom we choose.
We the undersigned citizens of Canada and residents of the province of Ontario draw attention to the House of Commons the following:
WHEREAS the Ontario Court of Appeal ruled on June 10th 2003 same sex couples have the legal right to marry,
WHEREAS under the constitution the provincial and federal government can choose NOT to invoke the “not withstanding” clause thereby protecting the charter human rights of lesbian and gay Canadian citizens to legally marry,
WHEREAS marriage is NOT the exclusive domain of opposite sex couples, but is the human right of ALL Canadian citizens including same sex couples,
The petitioners ask that Parliament support the Ontario Court of Appeal decision that same sex couples have the legal right to marry.
The petitioners call upon Parliament NOT to invoke the “not withstanding” clause so that marriage is defined to include same sex couples.
(An address is required so that this petition can be presented to the Canadian Government. Canadian citizens only please.)
Sincerely,
