Re: SUPPORTING INTRO 658 - Banning Horse-Drawn Carriages in NYC
Speaker Quinn:
Horse-drawn carriages do not belong on the congested streets of New York City. This 19th century relic impedes the flow of traffic and causes much suffering to the horses. Since January 2006, three horses have died public deaths – a tragedy to the horse and the reputation of NYC. In that time, there have been several accidents – people and horses have been injured. It is a dangerous and inhumane business and it is time for it to go. Other US cities, in addition to London, Paris, Toronto and Beijing, have banned this archaic practice.
We ask you to actively support Intro 658 – the bill that would ban horse-drawn carriages - to encourage your colleagues to do the same and to bring it to a vote – but only if it also gets your support. A CBS poll in November 2007 showed that 73% of the respondents voted YES to ban horse drawn carriages from NYC. The public, and not the tiny carriage industry, which has so much unexplained power, should be the arbiter of government policy. A win-win situation for all involved would be to replace this industry with "horse-less carriages" – an electric antique car replica that is safe, environmentally friendly and humane. It will bring NYC into the 21st century and make us all proud.
"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated."
