Houston I-45 Parkway & Tunnel Alternative Design

To:  Houston residents

The continuous growth of traffic in the Houston region is causing the construction of new highways and reconstruction of existing highways into meg-highways such is the 18-lane I-10. This type of highway development is having a tremendous negative impact in Houston’s urban core and inner city neighborhoods. Some of the negative impacts are shown in residents’ quality of life, i.e. air pollution, noise pollution, visual pollution, vehicular crashes and increase of flooding. Consequently Houston’s air quality is one of the worst in the nation and about 50\% of air quality is due to mobile sources such as automobiles.

Therefore it is imperative that Houston public elected officials and transportation officials to be proactive towards the construction and reconstruction of highway alternatives that protect and improve Houston’s quality of life. One of these highway alternatives is the I-45 Parkway & Tunnel (www.i45parkway.com). The I-45 Parkway & Tunnel alternative proposes to build a system of two roadway tunnels under the existing I-45 with capacity of 6 lanes per tunnel. This proposal calls to extend these roadway tunnels from Beltway 8 at Greenspoint to US-59 south of downtown Houston instead of expanding I-45 into a 16-lane mega-highway.

The I-45 Parkway & Tunnel alternative also proposes the long-term reconfiguration of the existing at-grade I-45 into an express parkway that will include high capacity transit. Ultimately this alternative will develop a green belt that will allow for local access while a system of toll-only roadway tunnels that will be used for through traffic.

This petition is to demonstrate Houston’s public elected officials and transportation officials that Houstonians support the I-45 Parkway & Tunnel alternative.
