Respected Sir,
We are concerned citizens who are deeply shocked in receiving news about arrest warrants issued against nine (9) students of Jadavpur University because of their apparent involvement in disturbing peace and restricting the police on 10th June 2005. This is a shame to such an esteemed university specially when it is discussing to claim an IIT status.

Earlier this year Executive Council (EC) isolated and suspended five students out of 250+ students participated in a movement in September 2003 to express their dissatisfaction in the prevailing examination system, as per recommendation of the one-man enquiry commission of Sri Amit Sen siting misconduct during the movement.

Students of Jadavpur University once again rose to the call of time and stood beside their five friends and unimously decided to go for a non-violent and peaceful concerted movement under leadership of FETSU (Faculty of Engineering & Technology Students' Union) demanding withdrawal of the suspension and resumption of academic normalcy in the campus. Seven students went for FAST-UNTO-DEATH from June 6, 2005 after the authority refused to withdraw the suspension.

JU authority led by Registrar and Vice-Chancellor disgraced this noble institute by bringing police forces in the campus amidst the darkness of midnight on Jun 10, 2005 to subdue the young and bright students who were already weak after days of hunger-strike. Several students were brutally lathicharged and one girl student was manhandled, reportedly even after they were hospitalized !

Under huge pressure from media, university autority decided to withdraw the suspension on July 4. But to ultimate surprise and betrayl, arrest warrants have now been served against nine students.

We, both JUites and non-JUites, condemn this irreseponsible actions by the university authority and later by police and expect you to intervene to save a university of such rich heritage and acedemic excellence from further damage.

With deep faith in peace and democracy, we would request you promptly take the following positive actions to reflect our aspirations in support to this petition organized by jualumni - a global forum of alumni of Jadavpur University.

1. Immediate and unconditional and withdrawl of undemocratic arrest warrants against nine young and bright jualumni to preserve JU's reputation.
2. Restore peaceful and positive academic environment in the campus.
3. Eradicate all roots of violence in JU once enlighten by Rishi Aurobindo Ghosh.
4. Show-cause to Registrar, VC or whoever called the police forces in the campus to beat students, showing extreme lack of professional responsibilty.
