Congressmember Yvette Clarke Super Delegate Support |
To: Hon. Yvette D. Clarke, Member, U.S. House of Representatives (NY-11)
Whereas, on Tuesday, February 5, voters enrolled in the Democratic Party within the 11th Congressional District in Brooklyn, New York State (the "Voters"), had the opportunity to express their preference amongst the Democratic candidates for President of the United States of America through a specific Primary Election (the "Election"); and
Whereas, the Voters also had the opportunity to select Delegates to represent them and the Voters' preferences at the Democratic National Convention in August, 2008; and
Whereas, a majority of the Voters selected Presidential candidate Barack Obama as their choice to receive the nomination of the Democratic Party, specifically an amount not less than 54% of the total Democratic votes cast in the Election within the 11th Congressional District; and
Whereas, at least three of six Delegate candidates and an Alternate candidate were victorious in the Election, providing candidate Obama with a 4-3 majority of Delegates or potential Delegates; and
Whereas, the policies and procedures of the Democratic Party entitle certain individuals who have not been elected by the Voters to serve as Delegates to the Democratic National Convention representing specific geographic areas, commonly known as "Super Delegates"; and
Whereas, the undemocratic impact of the Super Delegate provisions may be effectively and democratically offset by the decision of a Super Delegate to adhere to the preference of the Voters; and
Whereas, Hon. Yvette D. Clarke, Member, U.S. House of Representatives, will be a Super Delegate representing the 11th Congressional District in Brooklyn, New York; and
Whereas, Representative Clarke's immediate decision to support Presidential candidate Obama will not only align Clarke's preference with those of her constituents but may also encourage an earlier end to divisions within the Democratic Party, thus strengthening the Party's position as we approach the November General Election; therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, that the Voters of the 11th Congressional District, Brooklyn, New York, hereby call upon Representative Clarke to act in accordance with the preference of the Voters as expressed in the Election by immediately pledging her Super Delegate vote to Presidential candidate Barack Obama; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Voters of the 11th Congressional District hereby call upon Representative Clarke to acknowledge her intentions through an appropriate public statement, as well as any other appropriate means.
Sincerely,
