Decreasing the Number of Homeless |
To: U.S. CongressTo all those who have faith in the American Dream:
Imagine you are homeless and living on the street. You may shower at a shelter once a month and receive Salvation Army rags to wear. At this point you would be an eye soar with your bad hygiene and clothing. According to the 1996 National Survey of Homeless Assistance Providers and Clients (NSHAPC), 66 percent of the homeless have problems with alcohol, drug abuse, or mental illness. Now for that 34% of the homeless who have kept their mental integrity?
These homeless who still have their minds have fallen on hard times. They’ve had a long streak of bad luck, yet they still have the means to better themselves and give back to their community.
The problem is that these men and women have little chance of employment. If a man walks in wearing rags to a job interview, does he have a chance? I propose that all mentally stable homeless should be given suits to wear. With new clothes and a chance at employment, they could adopt a new mindset.
If mentally stable homeless were wearing suits you couldn’t tell them apart from any other corporate climber…
To get a suit the homeless would have to take an aptitude test to show that they have potential to lift themselves from their current situation. Just showing up would prove that they have some grasp on reality and are not completely lost.
Now you may be wondering… who will foot the bill? We, the taxpayers, would pay the initial price… However, our tax dollars, if this plan succeeds, will no longer be put towards long periods of unemployment checks and welfare. The plan will pay for itself.
Sincerely,
