Medical Attention for Eng. Hailu Shawel

Madame Secretary:

You have the opportunity and the power to save the eyesight of an important political leader unjustly held behind bars in Ethiopia. Mr. Hailu Shawl, leader of the major opposition political party in Ethiopia, the Coalition for Unity and Democracy (CUD), is at risk of loosing his eyesight for lack of medical care. Mr. Shawl’s eyesight has been deteriorating due to a retinal detachment and other health problems that have been poorly attended to since his incarceration in early November 2005. Reports originating for Qaliti prison where Mr. Shawl is incarcerated indicate that Mr. Shawl’s loss of sight at the moment is so severe that he is unable to read or write.

About a year ago Mr. Shawl had received medical care from an expert ophthalmologist from South Africa. The ophthalmologist’s visit was arranged with the help of the US Embassy in Addis Ababa. We thank the US Government for its humanitarian intervention. The ophthalmologist had advised that Mr. Shawl’s eyes should be examined and corrective procedures done within six months following the initial surgery. The recommended corrective procedure is now due by several months and Mr. Shawl’s sight is progressively deteriorating.

Madame Secretary, in the name of justice and humanity, we request that you use your good offices once again to help Mr. Shawl get access to competent eye care before his loss of sight becomes irreversible. Thank you for your kind considerations.
