The European Commission, The Honourable Tony Blair

Prime Minister of Great Britain, The Honourable Jacque Chirac

President of France

The Honourable Gerhard Schroeder, Chancellor of Germany

The Honourable Dr Bashar al Asad, President of the Syrian Arab Republic

The Honourable Mary Robinson, UN Human Rights Commissioner

Your Excellency,

In 1962 the then government of Syria withdrew citizenship from a number of Kurdish Syrians. It was an unjust decision based on these peoples ethnic background and the region they inhabited. As a result about 230 000 Kurdish Syrians today remain deprived of their civil rights, including voting, ownership and public education. While still officially considered foreign refugees they live in poverty and under severe psychological conditions. The terrible situation they are in and the hardship they suffer are not only against international laws but contrary to the principles of Human Rights Declaration.

On behalf of our people we seek your Excellencys kind assistance in this matter. Please save these people from misery and suffering by either

A) asking the UNHCR to accept them as refugees so they can be resettled in other countries; or

B) using your good office to help them regain their Syrian citizenship.

We sincerely thank you for your kind consideration.

01.08.2002

Sincerely,
