Get "Yeah-But-No-But" in the dictionary

We, the undersigned, ask you to put “yeah-but-no-but” in the forthcoming edition of your Dictionary. This phrase is not merely a fictitious line from Vicky Pollard in Little Britain, but a common utterance in today’s English language, which carries with it many complex meanings....

“Yeah-But-No-But” has become the Buzz word of our age.

It’s not just the catch phrase of Vicky Pollard – It’s the Zeitgeist of the moment.

Today we associate the word “yuppie” with the 80s – red braces, bad hairstyles and mobile phones the size of bricks.

In time people will look back at the Noughties and say that “Yeah-But-No-But” defined our age.

Can you believe that no dictionary has cottoned onto this yet? We’d like to draw attention to this phrase!

Middle England might baulk at seeing la Pollard as a cultural linguistic ambassador, but the fact is “Yeah-But-No-But” is a common utterance with many common meanings.

We even have some suggested definitions for the entry:

Yeah-but-no-but
1. Used to soften the blow of answering a direct no in conversation, disguises disagreement.
2. Used to strengthen the answer yes, where agreement is emphatic
3. Creates relevance between the turns of conversation; yeah acknowledges the previous statement while no resumes a topic that preceded it in conversation.
4. expletive a hedging expression that tempers the force of what’s being said in conversation.
