LiveJournal checkfriends

The checkfriends feature allows client software to notify the user when there are new entries to read on their friends list.

A few years ago, the checkfriends feature of LiveJournal's client interface was disabled for non-paid users for technical reasons described here: http://www.livejournal.com/community/lj_support/356334.html

LiveJournal does not list this as an exclusive paid feature anywhere on http://www.livejournal.com/paidaccounts/ or http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=131, so we can only assume that it is not integral to the paid service and is only disabled until LiveJournal has the resources to re-enable it.

Abusive clients can be blocked and load can be balanced by limiting the frequency that clients can check for new entries.

We believe that LiveJournal and SixApart have the resources to re-enable this feature for all users.
