Legalize Marijuana in Delaware

Individuals deserve the right to decide whether or not they should use marijuana. The government should not tell individuals what to do as long as they do not harm others. A national way to help the recession dramatically is to legalize weed. Marijuana is not a lethal drug and is safer than alcohol. It is established scientific fact that marijuana is not toxic to humans. Marijuana overdoses are nearly impossible, and marijuana is not nearly as addictive as alcohol or tobacco. It is unfair and unjust to treat marijuana users more harshly under the law than the users of alcohol or tobacco. Especially when people die from driving under the influence of alcohol and people that are driving under the influence of marijuana don't. Who is the government to say that people can't smoke weed? Who are they to put a law on nature? If anything alcohol should be illegal and marijuana should be legal. I believe that the government made marijuana illegal because they can't put a TAX on it and they don't want you to think for yourself. Being free-minded is part of our constitution and thats what the Hippies where. If thats the case then Marijuana should be legal and the government should raise the prices on cigars, dutches, blunts and wraps and that would be their TAX on marijuana. They could even have their own stores that sold Marijuana for the people that don't want to wait the time to grow their own product. The ideas and sources are unlimited. There are plenty of ways for the government to capitalize from the legalization of Marijuana.

Marijuana is too expensive for our justice system and should instead be taxed to support beneficial government programs. Law enforcement has more important responsibilities than arresting 750,000 individuals a year for marijuana possession, especially given the additional justice costs of disposing of each of these cases. Marijuana arrests make justice more expensive and less efficient in the United States, wasting jail space, clogging up court systems, and diverting time of police, attorneys, judges, and corrections officials away from violent crime, the sexual abuse of children, and terrorism. Furthermore, taxation of marijuana can provide needed and generous funding of many important criminal justice and social programs. Lets face it the majority of U.S Nationals smoke marijuana. Marijuana provides relief from pain, nausea, spasticity, and other symptoms for many individuals who have not been treated successfully with conventional medications. Many U.S nationals prefer marijuana to the use of alcohol as a way to relax, conquer boredom, and calm down from anger. Prohibition has failed to control the use and domestic production of marijuana.

The government has tried to use criminal penalties to prevent marijuana use for over 75 years and yet marijuana is now used by over 25 million people annually, cannabis is currently the largest cash crop in the United States, and marijuana is grown all over the planet. Life is already to short, they don't have to shave off years of peoples lives for something that is grown naturally around the world. In the 1700s weed was the primary crop grown by George Washington at Mount Vernon and a secondary crop grown by Thomas Jefferson at Monticello. Marijuana should be legal because there is no good reason for it not to be legal. Some people ask "why should marijuana be legalized?" but we should ask "Why should marijuana be illegal?" The government may have the right to limit those choices if the individual's actions endanger someone else. This does not apply to marijuana, since the individual who chooses to use marijuana does so according to his or her own free will. The government also may have a right to limit individual actions if the actions pose a significant threat to the individual but once again that does not apply to marijuana. When you smoke Marijuana it makes you think and you start to stare into space "daydreaming" giving people ideas of ways to invent new things and make the world a better place. Marijuana gives you a big appetite for food after you smoke it. It doesn't make you go out and be a rebel or a menace to society. In my opinion it would lower crime rate and drug related deaths because if it was legal there would be no reason to rob someone when you are able to have an ample amount of your own.
