Help STOP Warner Brothers’ Pan-and-Scan Lord of the Rings |
To: Thomas Lesinski, Executive V.P., Warner Home VideoConcerning the upcoming DVD release of the 1978 Bakshi version of "The Lord of the Rings": it has been confirmed this will be in a full-frame aspect ratio and NOT the original 1.85:1 as it was presented theatrically. It is greatly disappointing that Warner Home Video is not producing this title with the minimum of attention it would give to other titles in its catalogue.
A loss of more than 25\% of the full onscreen image is unacceptable. Consumers who love J.R.R. Tolkien will not purchase a substandard product. "The Lord of the Rings" should be presented in anamorphic widescreen, ideally from a new film transfer.
There will be considerable loss of sales and pre-orders due to the exclusion of an anamorphic widescreen image; and many popular Tolkien websites will aggressively denounce this title on its release date.
Mr. Lesinski, please reconsider your efforts and give this ambitious film a proper production on DVD, by releasing it on a double-sided disc so the consumer can choose either full-frame or anamorphic widescreen; or indeed revisit the film with a separate anamorphic widescreen release.
Sincerely,
