Save the Farms |
To: U.S. CongressEarlier this year, the delta smelt fish was placed on the endangered species list. Federal water managers cut the water supply to thousands of farms in California in an effort to save this fish. Since March, farmers in California have not had any water to use for irrigation on approximately 1 million acres of land. The unemployment rate is estimated to be approximately 40\% at this time. Individuals are turning to food banks for survival, and the price of fruits and vegetables have dramatically increased in other parts of California. These farmers have lost the ability to sustain an income and to provide for the basic necessity needed to sustain life. This action by the Federal water managers has place more value on the life of the Delta Smelt than on the lives of humans. Thousands of people are suffering because of this decision. This decision sets a precedent that may lead to the same kind of decisions in other parts of the country. We cannot allow the agricultural business in this country to suffer. America needs to protect its farmers. We are asking that the water supply be reinstated to this area. We do not believe that the life of a fish should hold more value than the life of humans.
Sincerely,
