Your Highness,

We, the undersigned, call on your Highness to spare the life of Filipino domestic worker Marilou Ranario. She was sentenced to death in January 2005 for the alleged murder of her employer. Her death sentence by hanging is now under final appeal with Kuwait’s Court of Cassation. We are told that a decision is expected sometime early next year.

We also understand that the family of her employer withdrew their personal rights against Marilou through a tanazul (Statement of Dropping a Lawsuit) issued by their lawyer in November 2006.

Marilou is a young mother, wife, sister and daughter who wanted little more than a better life for her family. She is an Education college graduate and her dream was to work as a teacher. However, grinding poverty in the Philippines compelled her to leave behind her children to work instead in Kuwait as a domestic helper. Her husband is a jeepney driver but until today, he does not have a regular source of income. It is indeed tragic that in her bid to eke out a decent living for her young family, she now faces the prospect of perhaps never seeing them again.

According to statements by her family, Marilou reportedly told them that she was being severely maltreated and that the night before her employer’s death, she feared greatly for her life. In this regard, we hope very much that the extreme conditions Marilou may have been subject to before the tragic death of her employer is considered.

In closing, we thank your Highness in advance for considering our petition of appeal and again, we hope very much that Marilou’s life may indeed be spared.
