To:  Stanford Student Housing

High temperatures at night during the summer of 2006, sometimes as high as 91 degrees Fahrenheit, has lead to constantly increasing sleep debt of students in Stanford Residences, which is affecting their performance as a student and their quality of life. They simply cannot get adequate sleep.

Research has shown that lack of sleep has devastating effects on one’s alertness and general well being. Lack of sleep has been shown to compromise the immune system and significantly decrease mental performance. The only cure for sleep debt is more sleep. A recent MSNBC article at http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13557553/ states that "when it's too hot or humid, people tend to awaken more frequently or get stuck in the light sleep stage" and this is exactly what students are suffering from. In addition, with the heat index rising to record levels, reviewing old policies such as these may be in order.

Therefore, we the Undersigned, ask that the air conditioner installation policy be revised so that students are allowed to have an air condition installed to help them get adequate sleep and eliminate their sleep debt.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned
